Planned Travel Management ROD Routes Roads and Trails (North, SD)

NOTE - It should be noted that if you travel on any 4 digit number roads you need the FS permit. The color maps DO NOT indicate the opening and closing dates (i.e.:  the roads not open until May 15th) so please compare the FS black and white map to determine if the area you want to ride in is open.

New construction

June 8th, 2011

If you drive south on US16 from Rapid City you may notice new construction at the Mystic Ranger District Office near Catron Boulevard. Nice to see our money at work. Too bad about all the cars in the employee parking lot.

For the past couple of days I’ve been trying to find out exactly how many government employees it takes to manage the Black Hills National Forest. This is not easy. Even locating all of the USFS facilities is like an Easter egg hunt. In Custer, for instance, there is a compound just north of town on US 385. It is nestled back in the trees off the highway, just to the South of the Cemetery. Then there’s an office in town. There’s another facility of some sort south of town. Who knows what else is out there?

I mention this because it seems that wherever you go, you see another forest service facility with a parking lot packed with employee cars or USFS vehicles.

But this is an agency that constantly claims to be short of manpower.

I would disagree. I think they have way, way too many employees who don’t have enough to do so they make work for themselves by enforcing silly rules. If Congress is serious about cutting government bloat, here’s where they can start. The government needs to fire about 80% of this USFS dead wood, sell off a bunch of buildings and trucks and get off our backs.

It’s time to make these USFS drones get real jobs.

This from the letsrideatv, club blogger worth a read.

Centennial Trail

June 18th, 2011

A participant at the SDOHVC event in Nemo last week mentioned that one of the rides was from Nemo to Pilot Knob on a trail that is also a section of the Centennial Hiking Trail (No. 89). The forest service opened up this section of trail just this year.

I happened to have ridden this very trail a few months ago and at the time I wondered about the wisdom of having ATV users and hikers use the same trail. Forgive me if I seem paranoid, but I think I see something here.

The SDOHVC rider said the trail was extremely busy — he estimated seeing at least 50 other ATVs or UTVs on it — and also that it was already very rough. In his words: “In bad shape.”

Should we be surprised? No. If the forest service crowds riders onto just a few trails, these trails are going to be subjected to lots of wear and tear. You will eventually see erosion, plant damage, litter and other evils the forest service accuses motorized vehicle users of.

So here’s the paranoid part. Why would the forest service make this happen on a trail also used by hikers? Are they trying to make a point with the hiking community, a group already predisposed to be against motorized vehicle use? Is this a way for them to drum up support for their anti-ATV policies?

You be the judge.
