Update on this. I have learned they are still enforcing the 62 in rule. It will be changed to 65 in approx 3 years to accomodate the move to 64 inch machines.
(that’s how long it takes to get through the bureaucracy.)

Spent 3 days out on the hills last week renting 3 different side x side machines. All were 64 inch…was careful to stay off the 62 inch trails, but noticed many, many folks on them.

Decided to take the time to measure the green gates and was surprised to find they are now 80 inches wide at narrowest part!

Wondering if they have changed the…[Read more]

  • Curious what was said if anyone was able to attend.

  • Like the ones shown on the dirt trax Mt Rushmore off road adventure episode.

I have been on every mile of 62 inch trail in the hills now and can’t find them. I am thinking they were actually FS roads. The “trails” I am talking about are “2 SxS wide” flat dirt with sweeping turns and sweeping whoops. Best part is you can run them at high speed…[Read more]

  • and as a follow up…the only way I can see you getting blamed is if you and your family are riding UTVs on the trail system that are wider than 62 inches.

    Are you?

  • Wow Heather, how lucky are you to be able to do that much riding in 1 summer! I am lucky to get 5 days in a year. I am curious what part of the hills/which trails you saw most of the trucks and Jeeps?

  • Agreed…I have yet to see anyone patrolling, but have only been out 1 time this year. I was amazed at the number of rigs I say headed to the hills, yet when I was out riding for 2 days I never saw anyone. It is a vast area and people disappear into it quickly!

  • Quick update. I was on 6901 and many other trails in that area last weekend for the first time in several years. I am happy to say there was no sign of any truck tires or ruts on the tails I checked out. Apparently the FS has stopped the trucks and the forest has quickly recovered back to a single 2 track in these areas. It was really exciting…[Read more]

  • These use to be my favorite trails in the BH area for ATV use because they were truly 50 inch trails. This last trip was a bit disappointing because of all the trails that have been converted to 10 foot wide logging roads. Here are the 50 inch trails that are now logging roads either in whole or in part:

    1101
    1102
    1107
    1043
    1103
    1104
    1106

    So…[Read more]

  • I agree….I understand there are already more patrols in the hills this year than previous years . Hopefully they are going after things like this in addition to enforcing the trail stickers on ATV/UTVs.

Stageyard are some of the best in the hills. Wish they were longer, but I always take riding groups there because they are so enjoyable. You can spend a couple hours riding those trails at a moderate pace if you run them both directions. Great elevation changes, some challenging areas on the NW section of 8151.

Realize the trails NW of…[Read more]

  • I have been running Avenza for the last 4 years. I recently had to get a new phone, so in the process of re downloading the maps for the hills. The only way to find them is to search by the name of the Ranger district in the store:

    “Mystic Ranger District MVUM”
    “Northern Hills Ranger District MVUM”
    “Bearlodge Ranger District MVUM”
    “Hell Canyon…[Read more]

I have been out in the hills riding since Thursday.
I am so frustrated with the incredible number of full size pickup trucks  I HAVE PERSONALLY OBSERVED in the last 24 hours running on our 62 inch only t

    • Catch them and fine them. Make it big and word will spread quickly.

I made a trip out to the hills a couple weeks ago to check out the 62 inch trail system and see what changes, if any, had occurred over the past 3+ years since I left the hills out of disgust over the new trail

This area is located on the north side of the Highway 44 (6) miles west of Interior SD. If coming from I-90, just tell the checkpoint you are headed for the Baja riding area and you will not have the pay the
